An Obsessive Journey

On my 24th birthday my flatmate gave me a puzzle. It wasn't just any puzzle, it was 'One Tough Puzzle', both in name and in practise. At first glance, the notion that there are 300,000 ways not to solve this puzzle and only one way to complete it, seems rather excessive. There are after all, only nine pieces. Yet, after a few tries, I started to realise just how tough this puzzle really was, and I found myself on a quest to solve it.

I have created this blog, by way of documenting my mistakes and formulating a strategy. I am, though, scared at every moment that someone might come along, ask to have a go and solve it instantly. Something tells me there cannot be a method, and only pure dumb luck in solving this bastard.

Secret Post

You have probably found this post because you want to know how I finished the puzzle and what it looked like. Well, it was actually very simple and really very surprising. After only a few days of trying and one unsuccessful method I struck upon one piece which turned about to be the key.

My two outward spades. After finding out that putting this piece in the middle wasn't going to work, I decided to begin my attempt with it, as the corner piece, and build from there:

So, I picked another piece up, and another and another expecting very little. I found I had a row of three, and then a set of six, but still I wasn't at all convinced I had made it. In fact, I had noticed I had already two outward pointing diamonds, when really I was only supposed to have one....did I have enough diamonds to have another, inward pointing diamond, on the outside to make up the maths? I just didn't know if I would...

Here's what was left....
enough diamonds? Maybe...

I worked with these three once or twice, I didn't at all get it straight away, in fact. I had one piece left and I was struggling with it; it had the right components, i flipped it once, but thought how much I didn't want to cheat, and flipped it back, then I just....tried it....

And here it is complete.....ta da!

Excuse the terrible photographs, I actually completed this at midnight so, no lovely sunlight like in all the other attempts....perhaps that was the key all along, late-night-thinking....

Not so tough now, are ya One Tough Puzzle?
